The Challenge: Isolating Root Cause of Network Traffic Degradation

The doctors, nurses, clinicians and researchers at this major healthcare organization rely on the institution’s network for critical communications and rapid access to electronic medical records (EMRs) and imaging services. IT faced significant challenges in isolating the root cause of network traffic degradation to a wide range of medical buildings, as well as with primary and backup data centers. The Solution: nGeniusONE Reveals Security Application Issues and DNS Query Spikes

The healthcare organization’s IT team turned to NETSCOUT™ to assess the problem. The nGeniusONE™ Service Assurance platform with Adaptive Service Intelligence™ (ASI) technology, InfiniStream® appliances and packet flow switches were used to gain rapid and clear traffic-based insights into the organization’s traffic problems. Two distinct issues were identified.

Using nGeniusONE, IT staff was able to uncover high utilization of the security application, which was consuming 60% of the bandwidth to the data centers scanning different machines. NETSCOUT worked with the IT security team to change configurations, effectively reducing the long connection times for users.

nGeniusONE also identified large spikes in DNS, which were causing traffic degradation. As a result, IT staff was able to quickly isolate a Linux system that was performing a high number of DNS queries, causing the problems. Once the system was taken off the network, response times to off-site medical buildings dramatically improved.
