Verify New Network Drop

After the big reorganization, over 100 offices were moved. You need to quickly verify that all the ports are set up correctly. LinkRunner AT's AutoTest makes it a snap.

  1. Connect it to the drop you want to test and select AutoTest

  2. In seconds, the LinkRunner AT tests six critical connectivity parameters and shows you a summary screen with pass/fail results.

  3. You can drill into detail on each of the test results to see what's really going on. See the link configuration including duplex and speed settings.

  4. Determine if you're connected to the correct switch and port.

  5. Verify that DHCP is working for IPv4 and even IPv6.

  6. LinkRunner AT performs a port open test on target devices to verify application connectivity more thoroughly than just a basic ping.

  7. Your last job is to check the fiber uplink to this floor. No problem! LinkRunner AT can run a thorough test of fiber as well as copper connections.

Document Test Results

You are managing a VoIP deployment project. You need to provide a report documenting that the network drop to each desk in the building is ready for VoIP and the installation of a new IP phone. You grab your trusty LinkRunner AT tester and get to work.

  1. Connect your tester to the network drop at the desk. Run the AutoTest profile you created to validate that the drop is correctly configured for VoIP. Test delivery of PoE, the speed, duplex and VLAN ID of the link, the availability of network services, and the TCP connection to the VoIP call manager.

  2. Note that the link speed is 100Mb. The link should be 1000Mb in this scenario. There is a problem here that must be fixed.

  3. You run a cable test and identify a broken conductor on the 4-5 pair. Since Gigabit Ethernet requires four pairs, the switch speed is limited to 100Mb with the 4-5 pair broken.

You fix the broken cable, re-run the AutoTest and all tests pass.

  4. To document the results of this drop before and after the repair you can either use the local reporting mode and save results on the tester or use the Link-Live Cloud Service reporting mode and save the results in the cloud.

The advantages of cloud service reporting include zero-touch reporting; the AutoTest results are automatically saved to the cloud immediately upon completion of the AutoTest without any additional work by you. You can also save comments with each AutoTest result to improve the quality of your report.

  5. If you use the local reporting mode the results are saved on the tester, uploaded to a PC and managed locally using the LinkRunner AT Manager application.

You can view test results and generate reports for an individual result or for the entire project.

  6. If you use the Link-Live cloud service reporting mode the results are managed in your Link-Live account.

You can view test results and generate reports for an individual result or for the entire project.

  7. With the Link-Live Cloud Service you can view, manage and report test results anywhere you have internet access.

The LinkRunner AT makes it easy for you to document that your network is VoIP-ready.

Troubleshoot Connectivity

The new guy in accounting can't access the servers he needs. Is there a network problem?

  1. The Switch test quickly verifies signal level and connection, nearest switch, and connected slot and port.

Wait a minute... isn't Accounting supposed to be on VLAN 190?

  2. A quick call to network operations gets the switch reconfigured, but to be sure, you test once again to verify the configuration is correct.

Solve Cabling Problems

The guys in shipping can't access the network at all. Time to find out why.

  1. From the user's desk, run the switch test. The LinkRunner AT reports that the cable is open at the near end - probably a patch cord.

  2. Use the handy internal wiremap port to quickly check the patch cord. No doubt, that's the problem.

  3. Replace the defective patch cord, reconnect to the switch and test again to be sure that the port is connected properly. Done and verified!

Create Auto Test

LinkRunner AT lets you configure autotests for your environment.

  1. Define whether or not PoE is expected and the class of device.

  2. Enable or disable IPv6 testing.

  3. Define both IPv4 and IPv6 targets for testing application availability. Choose to ping a target device or perform a TCP port open to ensure that application traffic can get through.

  4. Save and recall AutoTest profiles by name for use in different environments.
