Overview

The proliferation of smart phones and tablet PCs revolutionized how and where we work and live. The massive increase in data traffic consumed by these devices has accelerated the deployment of LTE technology amongst service providers. The deployment of LTE posts great visibility challenges to network performance engineering teams on the control and user plane transactions. 80% of the troubleshooting time is wasted as a result of the lack of visibility due to traditional monitoring and troubleshooting solutions that cannot scale to the loaded LTE network.

Network Time Machine (NTM) is the first solution to provide back-in-time root cause analysis, down to the packet level, supporting 20Gbps LTE traffic on both portable and rackmount platforms. Its plug-and-play operation supports automatically identifying LTE subscribers from captured traffic; assessing each subscriber’s mobility and session management transactions, as well as identifying issues in the user-friendly UI.

Easy to use multi-segment analysis supports collaborative packet analysis using packet captured from multiple NTMs and other PCAP-generating sources. It reduces the time and effort required to isolate tough end-to-end application problems.

Fast Plug-and-Play Deployment

Fast plug-and-play deployment captures all traffic for back-in-time identification of intermittent application and network issues in the LTE core.

Network Time Machine is an all-in-one solution for back-in-time root cause analysis for network and application problems. Users can capture all packets without loss with minimal configuration. NTM has been independently verified to capture 100% of the packets through multiple Ethernet interfaces at rates up to 20Gbps so that you will never miss an event.

NTM has large storage capacity that supports continuous capture of traffic for back-in-time visibility. Users can select the time period of interest to visualize all subscribers with activities and examine subscribers’ critical c-plane or u-plane events by specifying the IMSI, UE-IP or MSISDN.

Integration with Packet Brokers

Network Time Machine (NTM) automatically recognizes LTE interfaces by analyzing transactions. Multiple LTE interfaces can be aggregated with a packet broker, such as the VSS vBroker Series, to the NTM for end-to-end user transaction analysis across the c-plane and u-plane. Together with its high performance stream-to-disk functionality, up to 20 Gbps, the NTM will not miss a critical event that points to the root cause of subscriber mobility or 3G/4G handover issues.

  • Reconstruct packet Timestamp for traffic fed by Network Packet Brokers from VSS, Ixia/AnueSystems, Gigamon or c-Packet with Timestamp function for correlated analysis across multiple LTE segments even when they are geographically far apart.
  • Monitoring a subscriber’s traffic on multiple user-plane interfaces: e.g. VSS vBroker supports extraction of packets of a subscriber to NTM when monitoring traffic on S1&S11 and/or S5 interface.
  • When NTM captures traffic from multiple user plane interfaces, it has the ability to synchronize, merge and analyze data flows collected and provide a multi-segment bounce chart with timing error detection. Root cause issues such as dropped packets or abnormal network latency as packets traverse across the u-plane can be quickly isolated and identified.

Smart LTE Analysis for Quick C-plane and U-plane Visibility

During the deployment of LTE engineers must have visibility to resolve issues caused by interoperability between network elements, mobility issues such as 3G/4G handover, and Circuit Switch fallback for seamless voice and data service support. Network Time Machine can capture and analyze all transactions and display information pointing to problems associated with a network element, such as eNB or the type of user equipment.

Smart Multi-Segment Analysis

Smart multi-segment analysis reduces time to isolate performance impairments. The goal of deploying LTE is to support the explosive growth of faster and richer data contents. Download speed or voice/video quality degradation are key impairments that must be resolved. The challenge is to detect packet loss or latency that degrades throughput under high data volume. Network Time Machine ensures visibility of packet loss event in the u-plane with high performance data capture. Its unique packet based post-capture multi-segment analysis supports correlated analysis of packet loss and latency for root cause analysis even when packets were captured across multiple segments by multiple NTMs, or other capture solutions.

Smart Voice Over LTE Performance Analysis

NTM provides real-time and post-capture analysis of IMS registration and bearer creation, VoLTE call setup and quality assessment. It is easy to visualize all VoLTE calls made during the time of interest, call setup status, duration, MOS score for each leg of the EPC u-plane interface, and the type of codec used. Quality parameters including packet loss, jitter, and latency are displayed to quickly isolate the cause of voice QoS degradation. In addition, IMS related SIP procedures such as register, subscribe and messages are analyzed for failure and response latency.

All packets related to a VoLTE call for a subscriber and can be easily extracted and displayed in a multi-segment correlated view for detailed analysis.

Innovative Performance Bottleneck Analysis (PBA)

Bottleneck Analysis (PBA)identifies whether problems are in the server, network or subscriber. NTM automatically discovers applications and reports performance metrics by server, network and subscriber (radio) domains. Performance Bottleneck Analysis (PBA) displays server, network and subscriber contributed time for a TCP flow. PBA metrics show where application time is spent, in order to identify the cause of performance complaints.

NTM additionally also shows how related performance metrics change over time, allowing drill down to isolate the fault domain to a specific server, or network. The packet extraction process is integrated with the UI so enabling the set of flows exhibiting the problem to be analyzed quickly.

Once the relevant packets are extracted, NTM guides the user from application to flow to transaction views using an intuitive drill down process. Bounce charts display transaction behavior over time and indicate problem packets without going into the decode view. The result is increased operational efficiencies through a reduced learning curve, shorter time to domain isolation and quicker root cause resolution.

NETSCOUT’ Performance Bottleneck Analysis (PBA) is based on a patent-pending algorithm in which the analyzer isolates the time that a flow spends with the server, network and client. This method shortens troubleshooting time because it requires only one measurement point near the server or the client to determine change in network latency. The PBA function shows the average time application flows (for example, SMTP and HTTP) spent on the server, network and client. Trend graphs show when application flows change the amount of time spent on server or network domains during the analysis period.

  • Once the fault domain is identified, detailed metrics can be used to isolate the root cause. The NTM automatically tracks key performance indicators such as server connections, TCP resets from servers, or retransmissions to understand the exact cause of performance issues.

Network Time Machine Portable2 is the first portable appliance capable of 20Gbps stream-to-disk throughput for use anywhere in the EPC. The Portable1 with 3Gbps capture rate and more compact design and four 1Gbps capture interfaces is best suited for field use around eNB's. Both portable chassis are rugged with large LCD displays, and keyboards and mouse pads integrated into the fold-down screen protector thus making them ideal for field deployment.
